A Nadiad family suffered deep personal loss in the tragic crash of Air India Flight AI-171, which went down shortly after take-off from Ahmedabad’s Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport on June 12, 2025 while bound for London.

What happened: The Gujarat State Information Commission has fined the Nadiad deputy collector and Public Information Officer (PIO) Nirbhay Gondaliya ₹5,000 for failing to provide information under the Right to Information (RTI) Act within the legally mandated timeframe. Why the fine: An applicant, Hemant Patel, had filed an RTI on April 21, 2025 requesting a copy of a government order. Despite statutory timelines (30 days) and a subsequent appeal order to provide the information, it was not supplied on time and the officer instead asked the applicant to visit the office to collect documents. The Information Commission ruled that this amounted to intentional delay and was contrary to the RTI Act’s spirit. Commission’s remarks: During the hearing, the officer’s explanation consisted only of the word “SORRY”, which the commission said didn’t justify the delay or the failure to follow the appellate authority’s order. Penalty order: The commission directed the officer to deposit ₹5,000 within seven days or face deduction from salary. The collector of Kheda district was asked to report compliance by December 10.

The complainant met an agent from Barnala through social media who posed as a visa service provider with purported connections to Canadian immigration officials. Trusting their assurances, he initially sent ₹1.5 lakh as a transfer, then later referred his clients too — all of whom paid large sums for “security deposits” that were promised to be refundable after entry into Canada. The agents created a WhatsApp group, regularly gave supposed documents, and repeatedly assured the victims that visas were being processed. Months passed with no visas issued, and ultimately the fraudsters became unreachable — with their mobile phones switched off.

A private luxury bus caught fire late on Nadiad–Anand road near Bhumel railway overbridge. Fortunately, all 20–25 passengers were safely evacuated by the driver before firefighters brought the blaze under control. No casualties were reported and the cause of the fire is under investigation.
